SALINA, Kan. — The Community Art and Design Committee is urgently seeking new applicants as the advisory board struggles to maintain a quorum. With the departure of a practicing artist member and two full-term, at-large positions currently open, city officials are fast-tracking expressions of interest ahead of the Aug. 24 Salina City Commission meeting, where new appointments will be made.

SALINA, Kan. — A public art project destined for Fire Station No. 4 is taking shape after a weeklong summer camp where local children, firefighters and city staff designed custom clay tiles. The tiles, which include both large stenciled designs and individually personalized pieces, will dry for four to six weeks before firing. Officials expect the final glazed installation to be unveiled in March or April.

SALINA, Kan. — The fabrication of a perforated metal identifier wall for Fire Station No. 4 has been delayed due to ongoing material shipment issues. Despite the slowdown in acquiring steel, Community Art and Design Committee Chair Bob Haworth remains optimistic that the public art installation will still be completed and installed by the end of the year.

City invests in comprehensive public art archive and map

SALINA, Kan. — Salina has invested in the Public Art Archive to digitally catalog the city's extensive collection of public artworks, including city-owned capital improvement projects and privately funded murals. The digital archive will provide residents with an interactive map and search feature, making it easier for the public to locate and learn about the city's various sculptures and installations.

Salina cultural plan survey results expected early next year

SALINA, Kan. — Findings from a recent community survey regarding Salina's new cultural plan, The Big Picture, are expected to be finalized and presented by January or February. While preliminary information will be shared during the annual "State of the Arts" presentation in October, city officials are waiting for the comprehensive roadmap before making major decisions on future arts initiatives and emerging artist programs.

A local arts-and-healing initiative to host benefit dance performance

SALINA, Kan. — The Kansas City-based Owen/Cox Dance Group will perform in Salina from Oct. 8 to 10 as part of "Collective: Our Stories of Cancer," a local arts-and-healing initiative to support and celebrate cancer survivors. The 60-minute performances, organized in conjunction with Salina Arts and Humanities, will cost $20 for adults and $10 for students.

Volunteers needed for upcoming museum street fair and chili cook-off

SALINA, Kan. — Organizers are calling for volunteers to assist with the upcoming Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair and its popular chili cook-off scheduled for Sept. 26. Additionally, community members and organizations interested in participating in the event's parade have until Friday, Aug. 28, to submit their entry applications.

The Land Institute hosts community weaving event for Prairie Festival

SALINA, Kan. — The Land Institute is hosting a free community day Thursday, Aug. 20, to prepare for the upcoming Prairie Festival. Attendees will collaborate with Kansas City-based artists Rena Detrixhe and Karen McCoy to weave sapling structures for a festival art installation. Participants are encouraged to RSVP online so organizers can accurately prepare catered lunches.
