Budget revision approved amid gateway sign questions
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — A fiscal 2026 budget revision was approved to accept and allocate funds from the Sweetwater County Joint Travel and Tourism Board and the Rock Springs International Day Committee. The revision includes $10,000 for the International Day event and funds for a highway gateway sign project at Exit 102. A council member questioned the estimated $40,000 cost and design of the gateway signs, prompting city staff to offer to provide the original design documents from the tourism board for further council review.
City advances historic off-track betting ordinance
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — The Rock Springs City Council unanimously approved amendments to an ordinance establishing a local approval process for simulcasting and pari-mutuel wagering, including historical horse racing terminals. During the meeting, legal counsel and industry operators noted that Rock Springs is believed to be the first municipality in Wyoming to draft such local control regulations, likely setting a model for the rest of the state. The council successfully amended the second reading of the ordinance to extend the city clerk's review periods to better accommodate staff workloads, while maintaining language requiring proof of "serious adverse effects" to prevent the city from arbitrarily denying applications.
Rising complaints prompt police statement on e-bikes and dirt bikes
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Following a surge in resident complaints about dust, noise and safety hazards, city officials announced that the Rock Springs Police Department will issue a public statement clarifying rules for youth riding e-bikes and dirt bikes. City officials noted that while e-bikes remain largely unregulated by state statute, the city is exploring its statutory authority to address safety concerns. A council member also reminded residents of an existing ordinance prohibiting motorized vehicles from operating at speeds over 5 mph within a 300-foot buffer zone of any business or residence.
Rezoning paves way for new trade school
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — The city council approved the second reading of an ordinance to rezone a 15-acre parcel on Yellowstone Road from heavy industrial to light industrial. The property, owned by Sweetwater County School District No. 1, required the zoning change to legally permit the construction and operation of a planned trade school facility.
City renews trade agreement for concerts in the park
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — A long-standing trade agreement between the city and Wyo Radio was unanimously renewed to provide marketing and promotional services for the 2026 Concerts in the Park series. In exchange for the radio station broadcasting the events and organizing musical acts — an estimated value of $1,000 per month for three months — the city will allow the station to display promotional banners on the Bunning Park shelter during the summer concerts.
