Child airlifted to Peoria following e-scooter collision

ROCHELLE, Ill. — A 10-year-old boy riding an e-scooter was airlifted to a Peoria hospital with a compound fracture after colliding with a car on Lakeview Drive near South Ninth Street this weekend. Police Chief Pete Pavia reported at the city council meeting that, according to the preliminary police report, a vehicle traveling parallel to the child struck him with its side mirror, though fault has not yet been determined. City officials called the collision a "close call" and a critical learning opportunity for the community regarding the safety of alternative transportation on public thoroughfares.

City ramps up e-bike and scooter safety education following accident

ROCHELLE, Ill. — In the wake of a recent e-scooter collision and a new state law governing e-bike and e-scooter use taking effect Jan. 1, 2027, the city is partnering with The REC Center and schools to increase safety education. The police department and school resource officers have already held one safety class, with three more scheduled. While officials noted that no local schools have banned the devices, the heavy traffic of students on e-bikes and scooters during morning and afternoon commutes requires proactive safety measures.

Council awards $551,408 contract for downtown electric undergrounding

ROCHELLE, Ill. — The city council unanimously approved a $551,408 contract with Helm Electric Facility Solutions for the second phase of downtown electric undergrounding. As the sole bidder, Helm will convert individual building electrical services to underground feeds, allowing the city to decommission overhead transformer banks and remove utility poles. The project is scheduled to begin at the south end of the downtown area and work north, with substantial completion expected by Dec. 1, 2026, and final completion scheduled for Feb. 1, 2027.

City approves $329,832 contract for mandatory integrated resources plan

ROCHELLE, Ill. — To comply with the state's Municipal and Cooperative Electric Utility Transparent Planning Act, the city council unanimously approved a $329,832 professional services agreement with Polar Consulting. The firm will develop a 20-year integrated resources plan and a five-year action plan for Rochelle Municipal Utilities, which serves approximately 7,500 customers. The comprehensive study will evaluate future energy needs, generation market resource adequacy and local resiliency, with a final plan required by Oct. 15, 2027.

New indoor wrestling facility approved for Lincoln Highway

ROCHELLE, Ill. — Rochelle Wrestling Club has found a permanent home after the city council unanimously approved a special use permit for an indoor athletic facility at 1135 Lincoln Highway. The property, zoned for highway commercial use, will host practices, training and instruction for approximately 60 local athletes ranging from ages 4 to high school. Program organizers informed the council that the facility will operate on weeknights, which will minimize parking conflicts with neighboring businesses.

Recreation center to host Trick or Treat Safe House

ROCHELLE, Ill. — Local families will have a secure, indoor environment to celebrate Halloween at the upcoming Trick or Treat Safe House. The annual event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at The REC Center, providing an alternative for children to gather candy and celebrate the holiday safely.
