City explores planting pawpaw trees on municipal land to boost tourism

ROCHELLE, Ill. - Rochelle may soon become a regional destination for the pawpaw fruit, as city officials consider utilizing vacant municipal property for agricultural tourism. Following a large turnout at a nearby Paw Paw, Illinois, festival, Visit Northwest Illinois Executive Director Matthew Lenox pitched the proposal to the council, presenting an aspirational vision that cultivating the trees could eventually spur international tourism. Lenox noted that City Manager Zeke Jackson and Public Works Director Tim Isley have already toured potential planting sites. The proposal aims to use the native, tropical-tasting fruit to boost local appeal and attract manufacturing interest, though officials acknowledge it remains in the exploratory phase.
