Commission tables RCPD traffic grant over contract concerns

RILEY COUNTY, Kan. - A request from the Riley County Police Department to apply for a 2027 Federal Highway Safety Grant was tabled due to legal concerns over the contract's language. The Special Traffic Enforcement Program grant reimburses officer salaries for off-duty traffic enforcement. However, recent changes to the application process designated Riley County as the awardee instead of RCPD. County Counselor Jacob Hansen noted that the county lacks the authority to enforce the grant's operational obligations, prompting a request for the Kansas Department of Transportation to revise the application before moving forward.

Human Resources Director Elizabeth Ward reported that nine virtual pre-screening interviews have been scheduled for candidates who meet the minimum requirements. The county's planning staff will review all relevant factors and provide a recommendation by mid-November before a formal resolution is voted upon.
