Revolutionary War descendants to lead Hutchinson's July 4th parade

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Members of the Sons of the Plains Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will lead Hutchinson's annual Patriots Day Parade on July 4, marking a special milestone in the organization's nationwide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

The patriotic procession begins at 10 a.m. in downtown Hutchinson, running north on Main Street from Avenue B to 12th Avenue. The Sons of the American Revolution will be followed by the Daughters of the American Revolution, creating a prominent display of revolutionary heritage at the front of the parade.

Bobbie Hulse, vice president general of the Kansas Society SAR's South Central District, said the chapter hopes to maintain the honor of leading the parade for several years as the country approaches the Revolution's semiquincentennial in 2026.

"All around the country we are as an organization doing reenactments and commemorations of events," Hulse said, noting that while Kansas was not part of the original 13 colonies, "we have many descendants of those who were supporting the cause."

The Sons of the American Revolution, founded in 1889, is a patriotic organization whose members must prove direct descent from someone who aided in achieving American independence. The national organization has been marking significant Revolutionary War anniversaries, including last year's commemoration of the Boston Tea Party and this year's recognition of the First Continental Congress.

Members participating in Friday's parade will muster in the Salvation Army parking lot before the procession begins. The chapter also recently led the Armed Forces Day parade in Abbyville.

The Patriots Day celebration extends beyond the parade, with early activities at DCI Park for families waiting for the procession to begin. The day concludes with fireworks at the fairgrounds at dusk.

The Wesley serves as the event's headlining sponsor, with associate sponsors including Jacam Catalyst, Construction Rental Inc. of Hutchinson, Hutch Auto Body, and 7 Clans Casino & Resort. Additional sponsors include Bretz Injury Law and Showalter Fireworks.

The parade and celebration are organized by Eagle Media, Country 102.9, My 93.1, KWBW, HutchPost, Hutch Rec, Kansas State Fair, Downtown Hutch, and the City of Hutchinson.

The announcing stand will be positioned in front of Eagle Media Studios at 9th and Main streets.
