Residents urge county, city leaders to ban battery storage facilities

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Local government officials in both the Reno County Commission and Hutchinson City Council addressed residents' demands for a moratorium on battery energy storage systems during recent meetings.

Residents raised alarms over a potential facility near Buhler, citing the risks of thermal runaway fires and toxic emissions. A retired Hutchinson and Reno County firefighter testified about the dangers of highly flammable gases and the large volume of water required to cool lithium-ion systems. The firefighter warned that water runoff from a catastrophic failure could contaminate the Equus Beds aquifer, which provides water for more than 550,000 people across four counties.

County staff acknowledged the safety and environmental concerns but clarified that the county has not yet received an official conditional use permit application for any such industrial project. Officials noted that Reno County is holding joint discussions with the cities of Hutchinson and South Hutchinson to ensure safety protocols and natural resource protections are established before any potential developments proceed.
