Reno County students compete on state and national stages in trades, civics
Four local students travel to Atlanta for SkillsUSA; three head to Wichita for National Civics Bee
Several Reno County students are making their mark in state and national academic and vocational competitions this summer, with local schools celebrating a national medal in technical education.
Four Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy students traveled to Atlanta to compete in the national SkillsUSA competition, going head-to-head with state champions from across the country. The competitors included Harlie Terrell of Buhler High School in welding sculpture, Tanner Loughrie of Haven High School in open job skill demonstration, Blake Beaumont of Hutchinson High School in job interview and Chyanne Myers of Hutchinson Community College in post-secondary job interview. According to Hutchinson Public Schools, one of the local competitors returned home with a national medal.
In a separate academic event, three Hutchinson Middle School students will travel to Wichita on June 27 to compete in the Kansas State Finals of the National Civics Bee. The finalists will present civic ideas and test their knowledge against peers from across the state for a chance to represent Kansas at the national championship in Washington, D.C.
The state finals were hosted in Wichita in partnership with the Kansas Leadership Center and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The event was free and open to the public.
