Reno County forms task force to regulate data centers, battery storage

Facing growing public concern over the rapid expansion of utility-scale technologies, Reno County is moving to establish guidelines for large-scale data centers and battery energy storage systems before new projects break ground.

County Administrator Randy Partington announced the formation of an economic development task force that will include county commissioners, according to a county press release. The group is charged with reviewing internal incentive policies and setting clear operational expectations for developers eyeing unincorporated areas of the county.

The measure is designed to address potential zoning, infrastructure and environmental challenges. By establishing a regulatory framework now, county officials hope to have comprehensive standards in place to protect rural properties before formal applications are submitted to the Reno County Planning Commission.
