Red Flag Warning Issued for Southeast Kansas Due to Extreme Fire Danger

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Red Flag Warning for extreme grassland fire danger in southeast Kansas, effective from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST Thursday.

Critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly, according to Cowley County Emergency Communications. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Conditions include:

  • Extreme grassland fire danger.
  • Winds from the west at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
  • Relative humidity as low as 15 to 20 percent.

Any fires that develop will have the potential to spread quickly and behave erratically, officials warned.

A red flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring or imminent.

Residents are urged to take precautionary and preparedness actions, including avoiding outdoor burning and being prepared to evacuate if necessary.
