Railroad Crossing Closures to Disrupt Traffic in Multiple Hutchinson Areas

HUTCHINSON — Union Pacific Railroad will close several railroad crossings beginning Tuesday, forcing traffic detours across multiple areas of the city.
The closures will fully block crossings at 17th Avenue, 6th Avenue and 4th Avenue, according to a Monday announcement from the City of Hutchinson. Traffic will be rerouted to 11th Avenue, though specific detour routes have not been finalized.
"Detour traffic is being managed by a third party," city officials said. "As soon as more information is available, the City will provide a detour map to assist drivers."
The 11th Avenue crossing will remain open during the closures, but crews will conduct repairs in that area. A flagger will be stationed on-site to direct traffic safely through the work zone.
Additional closures are planned for the railroad crossing at Lorraine Street and 2nd Avenue, officials said.
City officials are urging residents to plan for extra travel time and seek alternate routes when possible. Drivers should exercise caution in work zones and follow directions from signage and flaggers.
The City of Hutchinson said it will provide updates as Union Pacific Railroad shares additional information about the closure timeline and detour plans.
The railroad crossing maintenance comes as part of ongoing infrastructure work in the area. No timeline was provided for when the crossings will reopen.
