City approves increased funding for SEK-CAP Pittsburg Area Community Transit (PACT) bus

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Pittsburg City Commission heard a funding request from the Southeast Kansas Community Action Program (SEK-CAP) for its Pittsburg Area Community Transit (PACT) system during Tuesday's meeting. SEK-CAP transportation director Scott Christiansen reported that the PACT route, which makes 21 stops across the city, has seen operating costs double since the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing a reduction from two buses to one. To help maintain the service, which is projected to serve 18,000 riders this year, the city has budgeted $43,000 for 2027, an increase from its historic $33,000 annual contribution.

Pittsburg launches redesigned city website with AI features

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Representatives from local agency LimeLight Marketing officially presented Pittsburg's newly redesigned website, which underwent a soft launch last month. The modernized site replaces a 2017 version that ran on outdated, slower-performing software. The new platform includes improved navigation categorized by user type, better calendar functionality and an artificial intelligence chatbot that synthesizes information directly from the city's pages to answer resident queries. Since its launch, the site has seen a 40 percent increase in traffic compared to the same time last year.

Updated fireworks code sets distances from fuel storage, updates sales dates

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Pittsburg updated its fireworks ordinances Tuesday to align with state laws and the 2024 International Fire Code. The new code officially sets the local fireworks sales period from June 20 to July 7 and explicitly prohibits the discharge of fireworks in public streets and roadways. The ordinance also introduces new safety buffers for seasonal fireworks stands, mandating they be located at least 50 feet from consumer fuel pumps and 100 feet from bulk fuel storage tanks.
