Council approves controversial data center land sale in 5-2 vote
PAGE, Ariz. - The Page City Council approved the sale of 500 acres of city-owned land for a proposed data center in a contentious 5-2 vote Wednesday night, following nearly an hour of public comment overwhelmingly opposed to the project. The ordinance authorizes the sale to Huntley, LLC., described as an Arizona company with a London address in the meeting agenda, for a project that proponents estimate could be valued at up to $15 billion and generate significant tax revenue for the city. Dozens of residents voiced concerns about the data center’s potential impact on water and electricity resources, noise and light pollution and the town’s tourism-focused identity. During a lengthy debate, council members in favor argued the contract contains strong safeguards, including provisions that the developer must source its own water and power and that the city would gain tax revenue even from behind-the-meter power generation. Council members who voted against the sale, cited a lack of concrete details, the rushed nature of the vote and overwhelming negative feedback from the community. The approval begins a multi-year feasibility and planning process; it does not guarantee the data center will be built.
City initiates process to purchase 800 acres of state trust land
PAGE, Ariz. - The city of Page has filed an application to begin the process of purchasing approximately 800 acres of Arizona State Trust Land located adjacent to Ferry Swale Road. The potential acquisition was listed as a future agenda item for discussion Wednesday. While details are preliminary, Councilwoman Amanda Hammond suggested the land could serve as a more appropriate location for large-scale developments, potentially including the recently debated data center project. City staff will report back to the council as the application process moves forward.
Property sale deadline extended; council touts new developer safeguards
PAGE, Ariz. — The City Council unanimously voted to extend the closing deadline for a property purchase agreement with Peasley Holdings, LLC of Williams, Arizona, to March 31, 2026. The agreement concerns city-owned property at 714 North Navajo Drive, the former fire station and maintenance facility. During the discussion, council members highlighted a new policy being included in all city land sales to prevent speculation. The contract now includes a repurchase clause requiring the buyer to invest at least $1 million in development within 12 months of closing. If the investment milestone is not met, the city retains the right to buy back the property at the original sales price.
Federal shutdown stalls Page’s new water line project
PAGE, Ariz. - Progress on a critical new water line for the city of Page has been halted due to the federal government shutdown, according to a report at Wednesday’s City Council meeting. Consultants working on securing funding for the project are in a “holding pattern” until federal agencies reopen. Despite the delay, the project has gained significant political support, with U.S. Reps. Eli Crane, Greg Stanton, Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar signing a letter of support for Page’s efforts to secure funding through the Great American Outdoors Act. The letter cites the need to modernize aging infrastructure that also serves regional users.
Parks board recommends BMX track for master plan
PAGE, Ariz. - The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has unanimously recommended adding a BMX and pump track to the city’s master plan, Councilwoman Kenna Hettinger reported Wednesday. The proposal is now expected to come before the City Council for final approval. The board is also exploring the creation of an urban trail system to connect the city’s mesa with the sports complex and the ranchettes neighborhood.
Contour Airlines proposes new flights to Los Angeles, Las Vegas
PAGE, Ariz. - Contour Airlines is considering adding new destinations from Page Municipal Airport, with a company executive telling the City Council on Wednesday that flights to Los Angeles and Las Vegas could be offered as early as summer 2026. In a presentation, the executive highlighted the airline’s reported 99 percent flight completion rate in Page this year. The proposal was met with interest from the council, though some members raised concerns about personal experiences with flight cancellations and urged the airline to provide more consistent reporting to the city’s advisory body overseeing airport matters.
City to review Fourth of July event planning
PAGE, Ariz. - Following significant logistical and public safety challenges at last year’s Fourth of July celebration, the City Council has directed staff to review planning for future events. Citing massive crowds that overwhelmed the golf course venue, council members expressed a need to address issues such as funding, emergency access and crowd control. Staff will prepare a report on resources needed to ensure a safer event for the community in 2026.
