Reno County tornado survivors get help rebuilding after devastating storm
June 11, 2025

PLEVNA - Community organizations are mobilizing to help families rebuild after a tornado devastated Plevna and surrounding areas of Reno County, with cleanup crews having already removed 522 tons of debris from damaged homes.
The United Way of Reno County is spearheading a $250,000 fundraising campaign as part of broader recovery efforts coordinated by Reno County VOAD, a coalition of volunteer organizations that responds to disasters.
"Every dollar raised helps provide the tools and resources our neighbors need to rebuild their lives," said Lacey Mills, CEO of the United Way of Reno County. "We're incredibly grateful to those who have donated and ask others to consider contributing."
The next phase of recovery includes a contractor assessment tour scheduled for July 2, when licensed and insured contractors will evaluate repair projects and submit bids for work primarily involving roofs and windows.
Contractors interested in participating must register by June 25 with Jeff Thomson of Interfaith Housing & Community Services. Registration is available by calling 620-259-9916 or emailing jefft@interfaithks.org.
The Reno County VOAD coalition includes the United Way of Reno County, Reno County Emergency Management, Reno County Health Department, City of Hutchinson, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Interfaith Housing & Community Services, The Volunteer Center, Covenant Presbyterian Church, Kansas Mennonite Disaster Services, Trinity United Methodist Church and the Kansas Association of Chaplains.
Donations can be made online at unitedwayofrenocounty.org/disaster.
The organizations are working to address the physical, financial, psychological and spiritual needs of disaster survivors, according to VOAD officials.
