Kansas lawmakers respond to tragic attack on Minnesota lawmakers
June 16, 2025

Topeka – There are no words to describe the sadness and anger surrounding the news of the death of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the life-threatening injuries of Senator John Hoffman and his wife following the targeted political attacks that occurred in Minnesota last night.
Minnesota state Representative Melissa Hortman (a former House Speaker) and her husband Mark were fatally shot in their Brooklyn Park home by a gunman impersonating a police officer. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot and wounded at their home in nearby Champlin June 14, 2025. The suspect has been identified as 57-year-old Vance Boelter.
"My prayers are with the families of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, Senator John Hoffman, Governor Tim Walz, and the State of Minnesota. We are grateful to law enforcement for their ongoing work in the wake of this latest act of targeted political violence. Violence is never the answer, and we must stop letting extremist politics divide our states and our country." Said House Democratic Leader Brandon Woodard.
The Kansas House Democratic Caucus offers our assistance, prayers, and our deepest condolences to the Hortman and Hoffman families, Governor Tim Walz, and the State of Minnesota.
In addition, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly took to social media stating "Today, in Minnesota, two elected officials and their spouses were gunned down in their own homes.
"This cannot be our America. Our leaders must join forces to condemn this type of violence and to restore sanity and civility to our political discourse."
