Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Celebrates 80 Years of Community Tradition

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in South Hutchinson will host its landmark 80th annual Fiesta this weekend, June 6-8, marking eight decades of cultural celebration and community gathering at 612 S. Maple St., South Hutchinson. What began as a modest ice cream social decades ago has grown into the parish's largest fundraiser and a hallmark event for the region's Hispanic community. The three-day festival serves as both a vital source of funding for the church and a celebration of the deep cultural roots of the Hispanic community that dates back to the 1920s and '30s.

Friday's festivities launch with a steak dinner for the first 100 guests at $20 each, followed by an evening of entertainment featuring live music from VIERA Corel and the Brown family, a beer garden, and a poker tournament beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday's events start at 4 p.m. to avoid the heat, with Mexican food vendors lining the parish grounds and performances by local group Los Secretos. A professional fireworks show by Kapow Fireworks is set to light up the night sky around 9:30 p.m.

Sunday's programming combines worship and celebration, with regular Mass services at 9 a.m. and noon, followed by Fiesta events beginning at 11 a.m. The day will feature performances by folklorico dance groups from Wichita and Hutchinson, as well as vocal performances by returning favorite Jasmine, a young singer who made a popular debut last year. Throughout the weekend, attendees can enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine including street tacos al pastor, carne asada, aguas frescas, and Micheladas.

"This is the biggest fundraiser for the parish," said Father Eric Weldon, noting that "the proceeds go directly toward the operation of the church, which supports between 350 and 425 families." Beyond its fundraising importance, the Fiesta represents something deeper for the community. "This is more than a fundraiser. It's a celebration of faith, family, and tradition—something that brings everyone together," Weldon emphasized, highlighting the event's role in preserving and celebrating the cultural heritage of South Hutchinson's vibrant Hispanic community.
