NEWTON, Kan. — For the first time in more than a decade, Newton will host a community Independence Day celebration, marking the United States' 250th anniversary with an evening of live music, food trucks and synchronized fireworks. The free event, dubbed Rockets & Rails, is scheduled for 5 to 10:30 p.m. July 3 at Athletic Park near Fischer Field. The festivities will overlap with the opening ceremonies of the 78th annual Mexican American Men's Fastpitch Tournament at nearby Kelsch Field and will feature 16 Wichita-area food vendors, eating contests and performances by regional bands The Sassanachs and The Stolen Winnebagos.

The evening's formal program will begin at 7:45 p.m. with opening remarks from Mayor Rich Stinnett, followed by a presentation of colors by Boy Scout Troop 127 and the national anthem. The celebration will culminate at 10 p.m. with a pyromusical fireworks display staged by Victory Pyrotechnics from the south side of First Street near the Sand Creek dam. Spectators watching from outside the park can stream the synchronized soundtrack by entering the show code N5T5 on the Pyrocast mobile app.
