Newton considers downtown common consumption area and Wine Walk permits
City Commission to vote on Main Street initiatives and Chamber of Commerce funding
NEWTON, Kan. — Downtown Newton could soon see a vibrant shift in its social scene as the City Commission weighs plans for a new common consumption area and downtown facade improvements. During its June 9 meeting, the five-member commission will vote on a recommendation from the local Main Street program to create a designated zone where patrons can walk freely with alcoholic beverages. Commissioners will also consider approving a temporary alcohol permit for the annual Choose Newton Wine Walk scheduled for June 18, an event designed to boost foot traffic and raise money for downtown beautification funds.
Beyond the downtown entertainment initiatives, city leaders will tackle local economic and zoning issues, including a formal funding agreement with the Newton Chamber of Commerce. The agenda features a review of a special use permit for a property at 320 S. Pine, acting on a recent recommendation from the Newton Area Planning Commission. Following the regular agenda, the commission will make a mayoral appointment to the Newton Housing Authority and enter an executive session citing attorney-client privilege before preparing for a series of municipal budget work sessions starting June 17.
