Safe Hope requests reinstatement of city funding for 2027 budget

NEWTON, Kan. - Representatives from Safe Hope, a nonprofit organization providing shelter and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, formally requested local funding for their 2027 budget. Safe Hope Co-Executive Director Marla Schepmann and Grant Finance Manager Courtney Becker explained that while demand for services has increased due to rising housing costs and financial hardships, the city has not provided direct funding since a $16,000 allocation in 2024. The funding was previously absorbed from the police department's operational budget. Police Chief Craig Dunlavy expressed strong support for the organization, noting its vital role as a resource for both victims and local first responders.

Land lease with Ballard Aviation approved to protect aircraft

NEWTON, Kan. - A ground lease agreement with Ballard Aviation was unanimously approved for farmland located south and west of the company's airport property. The lease aims to prevent foreign object debris generated during agricultural harvest seasons from damaging the company's multimillion-dollar aircraft engines. Ballard agreed to pay a higher rate for the land than the previous agricultural tenants, generating increased revenue for the airport. The city also retained a 60-day severability clause, ensuring the land can easily be reclaimed should a new economic development prospect emerge for the site.

Alcohol permit approved for Big Fat Fun concert at Military Park

NEWTON, Kan. - A temporary alcohol permit was approved for an upcoming summer concert featuring Big Fat Fun scheduled for May 30 at Military Park. The concert is part of the Choose Newton Concert Series, which aims to drive local engagement and revitalization efforts. City officials confirmed the application was properly filed with Harvey County, and the measure was approved without opposition.

Alcohol sales cleared for summer festivals at Athletic Park

NEWTON, Kan. - Temporary alcohol permits were unanimously approved for two major summer events hosted by Sand Creek Festival Inc. at Athletic Park. The first permit covers alcohol sales from noon to midnight during the Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival on June 19. The second permit authorizes alcohol sales for the annual Rockets and Rails Independence Day celebration on July 3, ensuring local festivities can proceed as planned. Athletic Park is an official city venue.
