Golf course reports banner year despite weather challenges

NEWTON, Kan. — The city commission received a stellar 2025 year-end report for Sand Creek Station Golf Course, highlighted by a net operating income of $286,349. Despite having 24 fewer playable days due to heavy spring and early summer rains, the course hosted 36,646 rounds of golf. General Manager Dustin Housh reported that the facility exceeded budgeted revenues by $88,507 and finished nearly 9% under budget on total expenses, keeping the municipal course financially strong amid a nationwide boom in golf participation.

Sand Creek Station secures future national tournaments

NEWTON, Kan. — Sand Creek Station Golf Course will continue to be a destination for high-level competitive golf, securing agreements to host the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Men's Golf Championship in 2026, 2028 and 2030. The facility will also host First Stage of PGA Tour Q-School presented by Korn Ferry again in 2026, bringing approximately 80 international competitors to the community for a week, serving as a significant economic driver for the city.

City pursues contract renewal for high-performing golf management

NEWTON, Kan. — Following a highly successful 2025 season at Sand Creek Station, city staff announced they are working to renew the course management agreement with KemperSports. City officials praised the management team after the course achieved a 92.2 net promoter score — the highest among all KemperSports properties for the third consecutive year — and was recognized in the National Golf Foundation's GolfersVoice Awards as the nation's No. 1 standard/value course.

Commission approves infrastructure districts for APAC development

NEWTON, Kan. — The city commission unanimously approved a series of petitions, resolutions and ordinances to establish water, sewer and street improvement districts for the new APAC Kansas development. The commission also authorized a $111,000 engineering agreement with Professional Engineering Consultants to manage the project designs, with all associated costs eventually being assessed back to the property.

City authorizes $8.5 million in industrial revenue bonds for APAC

NEWTON, Kan. — Following a public hearing that drew no citizen comments, the city commission approved a resolution of intent to issue up to $8.5 million in industrial revenue bonds for the APAC Kansas project. The city's bond counsel with Gilmore & Bell confirmed that all legal publication requirements were met ahead of the unanimous vote, taking the next necessary legal step to support the company's local industrial development.

Revenue split approved with county for logistics park land sale

NEWTON, Kan. — Proceeds from the sale of a Kansas Logistics Park property to APAC Kansas will be formally split between the city and Harvey County, following the city commission's unanimous approval of a memorandum of agreement. The revenue-sharing agreement, already approved by the county commission last week, dictates that the city will retain two-thirds of the net proceeds while the county receives one-third, honoring the terms of a 2010 interlocal agreement.

City advances Sand Creek Bike Path extension with BNSF agreement

NEWTON, Kan. — The city will pay $40,000 to BNSF Railway for preliminary engineering services to accommodate the planned Sand Creek Bike Path extension south along Sand Creek to Southwest 14th Street. The city commission approved the agreement to meet the railway's requirements for building in its right-of-way. The engineering fee is an ineligible expense under the Kansas Department of Transportation grant funding the trail project, but city staff noted the cost fits into the city's already budgeted matching funds.

Three-party agreement clears way for bridge replacement

NEWTON, Kan. — The deteriorating Harvey County-owned Southwest 14th Street bridge over Sand Creek will be fully replaced following the city commission's approval of a three-party agreement with the county and the Kansas Department of Transportation. The agreement, passed unanimously, comes at no financial cost to the city but grants the county permission to build within city right-of-way to complete the grant-funded infrastructure upgrade.

City park to host annual 'Touch a Truck' event

NEWTON, Kan. — The annual "Touch a Truck" event will return to Centennial Park this spring. The popular community event, which gives residents and children an up-close look at various large vehicles and heavy equipment, is scheduled to take place in the park's parking lot on May 15.
