Esther Lederberg

Esther Lederberg was a pioneering microbiologist who discovered lambda phage and developed replica plating—fundamental techniques in modern genetics. Despite her groundbreaking work, she faced severe gender discrimination; her husband Joshua won the 1958 Nobel Prize partly based on their collaborative research, while she struggled for recognition and academic positions. Her lambda phage discovery became cornerstone of molecular biology.
