Katherine Johnson was a brilliant African American mathematician at NASA whose precise calculations proved critical to early U.S. spaceflights. John Glenn specifically requested that Johnson verify the computer calculations for his 1962 orbital mission, saying he wouldn't fly unless she confirmed the numbers. Her story was featured in "Hidden Figures."
