Charles Curtis

Charles Curtis was the 31st U.S. Vice President under Herbert Hoover (1929-33) and the first of documented Native American heritage (Kaw Nation). Born in Topeka, Kansas, he served in the House (1893-1907) and Senate (1907-13, 1915-29), rising to Majority Leader (1924-29). A skilled legislator known for coalition-building, he lost re-election with Hoover in 1932. He remains the only Kansan and Native American VP.
