Monarchs rally past Derby 5-4

DERBY, Kan. (AP) — Joey Senstock drove in two runs and the Hutchinson Monarchs withstood a late rally to defeat the Derby Twins 5-4 Friday night at Panther Field.
The Monarchs (14-4) scored twice in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and hold off Derby's final push in a back-and-forth contest.
Hutchinson struck first when Senstock lined a two-run single to right field in the opening inning, scoring Blake Bradford and Jeter Worthley.
Derby cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second inning on an unearned run. Griffin Cooley reached base, stole second and scored when the Monarchs committed two errors.
Bradford extended Hutchinson's lead to 3-1 in the fourth with an RBI double to center field, driving home Worthley.
The Twins rallied to tie the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Rolen Driskoll delivered an RBI single in the fifth, and Noah Allison connected on a solo home run to left field in the sixth to knot the score at 3-3.
Hutchinson regained the lead in the seventh when Tyler Mitchell drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Drew Bugner. Worthley followed with an RBI single to score Senstock, giving the Monarchs a 5-3 advantage.
Derby made a final push in the eighth when Joel Lindahl homered to left field, cutting the lead to 5-4. But Hutchinson's bullpen closed out the ninth inning to secure the victory.
The teams will play the second game of their series Saturday night at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson.
