MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson Middle School girls tennis team successfully defended its league championship Tuesday, outscoring seven opponents to finish atop the standings with 164 points, six ahead of runner-up Winfield (158), with Prairie Hills third (107), Haysville fourth (87), Wellington fifth (75), Haysville West sixth (66), Arkansas City seventh (62) and El Dorado eighth (7).

Every McPherson player medaled on the day. Dez Fritz won the No. 4 singles title, going 2-0 after a first-round bye and rallying in a tiebreak during the semifinals. The No. 1 doubles team of Audrey Pflughoeft and Sloan Shober and the No. 3 doubles team of Karsen Greer and Mabel Jones — who finished the season undefeated as a pair — also won championships, as did the No. 4 doubles team of Abrielle Yoder and Alison Palacios. Addie Schneider (No. 1 singles), Elsie Walters (No. 2 singles) and the No. 2 doubles team of Aly Jo Rausch and Paityn Behrens each placed second, while Halle Schneider earned third at No. 3 singles after winning a tiebreak in the third-place match.

"On a beautiful day for tennis, the MMS tennis team successfully defended their league title with a strong team performance across the board, with every team member medaling," said coach Henry Weiner. "Watching the team play, it is impressive how much they have grown this season, both as tennis players, competitors, and people."
