Kansas Avenue improvements must be completed before 2028 Highway 61 detour sends traffic through corridor

McPherson to Vote on Design Contract for $6.6M Road Project

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson City Commission is set to vote Tuesday on a $512,400 engineering contract to launch a major pavement restoration project on Kansas Avenue (U.S. 56), preparing the corridor for future heavy traffic. The agreement with Alfred Benesch & Company covers design services for the estimated $6 million initiative, which will replace pavement, curbs, and gutters from the U.S. 81 Bypass east to Maple Street. City officials aim to complete these improvements before anticipated bridge work on Highway 61 forces traffic to detour through the corridor.

The project is supported by a KDOT grant that provides a maximum of $3 million in state aid for construction, split between fiscal years 2027 and 2028. The city is responsible for the remaining balance—estimated at about $3 million—which includes the design fees and any construction costs exceeding the state's cap. According to state documents, the project is tentatively scheduled to go out for bid in July 2027.
