McPherson High School Tennis Takes Team Title at Buhler Invitational
Strong Individual Performances Lead to 53-Point Victory Over Seven-Team Field

McPherson High School's tennis team captured the team championship at the Buhler Invitational Thursday, accumulating 53 points to outdistance host Buhler (43), Wichita Classical (34), Valley Center (29), Salina South (18), Clay Center (15), and Nickerson (2). The victory was fueled by exceptional individual performances, led by Maryn Sandbo's second-place finish in singles competition and the doubles championship earned by Avery Unruh and Quinn Liebl. Sandbo delivered a standout semifinal performance, defeating Valley Center's Allison Munhall—last year's 5A state seventh-place finisher—by a commanding 8-1 margin before falling 8-3 in the finals to Buhler's Sofia Spies, the 2024 4A runner-up.
The depth of McPherson High School's roster was on full display as Mayson Wiens claimed fifth place in singles, losing only to Munhall during the tournament, while the doubles tandem of Dragon Rodriguez and McKenna Paul secured second place. Both doubles teams posted crucial victories over higher-seeded opponents from Wichita Classical and Buhler, performances that should benefit the team's seeding for upcoming Regional and State tournaments. With perfect weather conditions featuring sunny skies, 70-degree temperatures, and minimal wind, the team now turns its attention to even greater challenges ahead with the DG Classic and Tournament of Champions at Collegiate next week.
