McPherson students celebrated at Lakeside Park Arbor Day event
City plants 26 new trees as students receive free saplings and state poster winner is honored
MCPHERSON, Kan. — Eisenhower Elementary School students gathered at Lakeside Park on April 24 for a local Arbor Day celebration that recognized fifth grader Isabel Perry's first-place finish in the Arbor Day Foundation Tree Poster contest — the second consecutive year a McPherson student has claimed the top statewide prize. Perry and her family will travel to Topeka to be recognized by Gov. Laura Kelly.
The McPherson Public Library partnered with the Park Department and the Neighborhood Forest program to provide participating students with a free tree to plant at home. The event also highlighted McPherson's tenure as a Tree City USA community, ranking it among the longest-running municipalities to hold the designation. Furthering its ongoing Tree Master Plan, the city has already planted 26 new trees in Lakeside Park this year.
