McPherson soccer falls to Great Bend in regular season finale
Bullpups outshot Panthers 8-2 but couldn't find back of net in 1-0 defeat on senior night
MCPHERSON — The McPherson High School varsity soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Great Bend on Thursday night, despite outshooting the Panthers 8-2 in what head coach Chris Adrian described as a game that "just wasn't meant to be." The Bullpups had multiple scoring opportunities, including two shots cleared off the goal line and others that took unusual bounces wide of the post, while goalkeeper Gabe Standfast made two saves in the losing effort.
Great Bend made the most of their limited chances on senior night, capitalizing on one opportunity to hand McPherson the defeat in what was the final game of the regular season. Adrian acknowledged before the game that Great Bend was better than their record indicated and expected their best effort on senior night, which proved prophetic as the Panthers played inspired soccer to close out their campaign with a victory.
Despite the disappointing result, there was positive news for the Bullpups as their junior varsity team earned a 1-0 victory in the earlier match, with Farzad Saifi scoring the lone goal. Adrian emphasized that his varsity squad played well for most of the game and escaped without injuries, keeping focus on Tuesday's upcoming playoff opener at home. "The real fun now starts," Adrian said, expressing confidence that his team is positioned for a strong postseason run.
