MCPHERSON, Kan. — A semi-truck carrying 34,000 pounds of hydrochloric acid overturned Tuesday morning, forcing evacuations and road closures before cleanup crews successfully cleared the hazardous materials scene by late evening.

Environmental remediation contractors worked throughout the day to remove contaminated totes from the damaged trailer, with McPherson Fire Department's Hazmat Team placing protective booms around storm drains to prevent acid from entering the sewage system. All roadways reopened at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, though one lane will be temporarily closed Wednesday morning as contractors complete removal of contaminated soil near the intersection. Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including McPherson Fire, Police, EMS, Emergency Management, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Transportation, and the Salina Fire regional hazmat team deployed by the Kansas State Fire Marshal's office.
