McPherson nears goal of collecting cards from all 50 states for nation's 250th birthday
Bureau receives first international card from Ireland as campaign seeks submissions from final 15 states
MCPHERSON, Kan. — A local campaign to collect birthday cards from all 50 states for the nation's 250th anniversary is gaining global reach, with organizers now just 15 states shy of their goal.
The McPherson Convention & Visitors Bureau recently received its first international submission — from Dublin, Ireland — along with domestic arrivals from Minnesota and South Dakota, keeping the initiative on track ahead of July 4, 2026. McPherson's drive to mark the semiquincentennial joins broader statewide preparations supported by Gov. Laura Kelly.
To spur participation before the bureau's upcoming anniversary party, organizers are awarding a commemorative gift and a special McPherson 250th birthday card to the first person from each missing state who mails a greeting. CVB Director Joni Regnier said the handmade and purchased cards will be displayed in the bureau's lobby at 1111 E. Kansas Ave., alongside a map tracking their origins. Residents are encouraged to reach out to out-of-state family and friends to help fill the final gaps.
