McPherson Middle School Tennis Team Sweep Medals at Maize South Tournament
All Bullpups finish in top three of respective divisions despite tough competition from Andover

The McPherson Middle School tennis teams achieved a perfect medal sweep at the prestigious Maize South Tournament on September 15, with every player finishing in the top three of their respective divisions. Competing against traditionally strong programs including perennial power Andover, the Bullpups demonstrated exceptional mental toughness in warm, challenging conditions to complete what Coach Henry called "a strong showing against some tough opponents."
In singles action, Gwen Prieb battled through a competitive field in #1 singles, defeating opponents from Maize (6-2), Andover Central (6-0), and Maize South (6-1) while showing impressive composure in losses to Andover's top player. Hattie Krug overcame a sore ankle to secure third place in #2 singles, while Lauren Southern displayed remarkable mental toughness in #3 singles, rallying from a 1-5 deficit to 4-5 before earning her medal. The doubles teams also excelled, with #1 duo Charley Duerksen and Addie Schneider placing third in their tournament debut as partners, while seventh-graders Audrey Pflughoeft and Sloan Shober captured second place in #2 doubles. The #3 doubles team of Brielle Rothrock and Farah Britting also earned second place, showcasing their continued improvement over the past year. "This tournament is a great opportunity for us to gauge our strengths and weaknesses as a team," said Coach Henry, expressing optimism for the team's remaining fall tournaments.
