McPherson Middle School Ditches Chromebooks for Traditional Learning
School cites research showing reduced screen time improves student learning and mental health.
MCPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson Middle School announced Tuesday that students will turn in their Chromebooks at the end of the semester as the district shifts back to traditional paper-and-pencil learning methods. Principal Inge Esping said the decision is based on research showing that reduced screen time improves learning outcomes and mental health for middle school students, with the school hoping the change will "promote deeper thinking, handwriting fluency, and less screen fatigue." While technology will still be used during appropriate class times, students who need Chromebooks for specific homework assignments and projects will be able to check them out as needed rather than having constant access to the devices.
