McPherson Man Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash on First Street
Police say the van crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a tree at McPherson High School
MCPHERSON, Kan. — A 62-year-old McPherson man died Monday after his van left the roadway in the 800 block of East First Street and struck a tree at McPherson High School. McPherson County Communications dispatched police, fire and EMS to the scene at approximately 12:01 p.m.
According to the McPherson Police Department, a witness reported the van was traveling east on First Street when it crossed into oncoming westbound traffic, went onto the grass and hit a tree at the southeast entrance of the high school parking lot. McPherson Fire Department and EMS attempted life-saving measures and extinguished the vehicle to prevent a fire, but the driver, identified as James Willis, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The McPherson Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash pending results of a forensic medical examination. Anyone with information is asked to call the department at 620-245-1200.
