McPherson libraries launch reading programs, exhibits ahead of Law Day
Local institutions collaborate to highlight rule of law with reading lists, displays and a new student-built website
McPHERSON, Kan. — Three McPherson educational institutions are teaming up to help residents explore the rule of law ahead of the city's Law Day celebration May 1. The McPherson Public Library, McPherson High School and Miller Library at McPherson College launched reading initiatives, displays and a new website this month to highlight legal history and literature.
The McPherson Public Library created two specialized bookmarks — one for adults and one for youth — featuring reading lists centered on the legal system. The adult bookmarks include a link to a new website built and hosted by McPherson High School. The site offers additional reading recommendations and historical documents, including President Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1958 Law Day proclamation. The bookmarks are available at the library and at Twice Told Tales bookstore downtown.
"We've listed a variety of relevant books, both fiction and non-fiction, in print and audio formats," said Gentry Briseño, circulation director for the McPherson Public Library. Briseño noted that all recommended titles are either currently in the local collection or can be ordered from area libraries by staff.
Meanwhile, Miller Library is hosting a monthlong display of its law-related materials throughout April. Kristie Sojka, director of library services at Miller Library, said the collection is open to the public and includes extensive youth literature supported by the college's teacher training program. All materials at the college library are available for McPherson residents to check out.
