MCPHERSON, Kan. — Residents in central Kansas seeking treatment for chronic heartburn and swallowing disorders can now receive advanced diagnostic care locally, avoiding lengthy trips to Kansas City, according to hospital officials.

McPherson Center for Health, a 49-bed not-for-profit hospital, has installed the Endoflip and the Bravo pH Monitoring System, enabling physicians to evaluate esophageal function and track acid reflux over an extended period via a small wireless sensor. Funded by the McPherson Health Care Foundation and local donors, the dual technologies can be deployed together during a standard upper endoscopy, adding 15 to 30 minutes to a patient's procedure.

The new diagnostic tools offer a more comfortable alternative to traditional testing, which often required patients to remain awake during swallowing studies or wear a nasal catheter home. Dr. Clayton Fetsch and Dr. Brandon Stringer, surgeons at the hospital, said the paired systems provide a comprehensive look at digestive health by delivering immediate data on esophageal movement and long-term acid exposure metrics.

Lynette Dyer, director of surgical services, called the upgrade "a win for our patients and for rural healthcare," noting that keeping advanced testing in McPherson allows individuals to receive specialized, tailored treatment without leaving their community.
