McPherson High School Math Team Takes First Place at Fort Hays Relays
Sixteen students score 153 collective points to claim championship, extend program's legacy of excellence
Sixteen McPherson High School math students traveled to Fort Hays State University on Thursday, November 13, to compete in the Math Relays, claiming first place with 153 collective points. The championship victory continues the program's dominant tradition, marking the 33rd top-three finish in the past 40 years. Students competed across six different mathematical disciplines, with each event scored against all students at the same grade level, allowing participants to demonstrate their skills against peers of similar age and experience.
McPherson students excelled in individual competitions, with Dylan Fetsch earning first place in both Algebraic Manipulations/Simplification and Calculations with Calculators in the 10th-grade division. Logan Allen claimed first place in Applications of Algebra for 9th grade, while John Conard took top honors in Informal Geometry for 9th grade.
Other notable individual performances included Jonas Emery's second-place finish in Trigonometry for 11th grade, John Conard's second-place finish in Algebraic Manipulations for 9th grade, and multiple top-five finishes from Jack Boese, Keaton Crane, Megan Emery, Dylan Bruce, and Collin Tully across various events.
Team competitions, which allow three students to collaborate on tests, showcased McPherson's depth and mathematical prowess. The Bullpups placed first in multiple team events including Using Number Sense in both grade divisions, Algebraic Manipulation/Simplification for 11th grade, and Calculations with Calculators for 9th grade.
The math department celebrated strong performances from underclassmen, with many freshmen and sophomores competing against juniors.
