Coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, McPherson cross country enters 2025 with high expectations and the talent to meet them. Both teams qualified for state last fall, with the boys capturing third place—the second-best team finish in school history—while the girls tied their best 5K-era performance with a seventh-place showing. Individual state champion Caleb Muehler and third-place finisher Ethan Elder highlighted a memorable campaign that has set the bar high for this year's squad.

Summer preparation has been exceptional, with over 20 athletes participating in conditioning throughout the break. "The team culture and work ethic have been very committed this year as many of the athletes have increased their mileage from previous summers," noted the coaching staff. This dedication to building a strong base could pay dividends as the season progresses toward the championship meets in October.

Eight state qualifiers return to lead the charge, giving McPherson enviable experience and depth. The boys' squad features defending champion Muehler alongside Kayden Friesen, Tripp Pelzel, and Jonas Emery, while the girls return a strong core of Molly Owen, Reesa Whorton, Eliza Jex, and Lindley Jex. Keep an eye on newcomers Adeline Kramer and Kamryn Prescott, who could emerge as impact runners as the season unfolds.

The Bullpups will face stiff tests at two marquee regular-season meets. The Wamego Invitational provides an early look at state competition, while the prestigious Rim Rock meet attracts elite runners from multiple states. Despite graduating several key varsity contributors, the coaching staff believes this team can build on last year's success. "We are looking to build on last year's performances and return to State and hopefully better our state finishes," they said, while also emphasizing weekly improvement and personal records for the program's newer high school competitors.
