MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson City Commission voted unanimously to approve an agreement with the Kansas Office of the State Fire Marshal, adding the McPherson Fire Department to the state's wildfire response program.

Under the contract, which runs through Dec. 31, 2028, the city agrees to potentially deploy one brush truck, one command vehicle and three personnel to assist with wildfires across Kansas. Fire Chief Chad Mayberry told commissioners the program is fully reimbursed by the state and functions similarly to a mutual aid agreement.

Because of the mutual aid structure, the department retains the flexibility to decline a state deployment or cancel the agreement if local resources are stretched too thin to safely respond.
