McPherson County to hear debate on rural airstrip proposal

MCPHERSON, Kan. — A proposed private airstrip that has drawn swift opposition from neighboring farmers will take center stage Monday as the McPherson County Commission considers a special use permit for a grass runway along a rural stretch of Wheatridge Road.

The commission, which includes Chairman Keith Becker, will hold a public hearing on the proposal for a recreational "back country" aircraft runway. Adjacent property owners have submitted written objections, citing concerns that low-flying planes would bring increased noise, encourage trespassing and disrupt agricultural operations.

Beyond the airstrip proposal, commissioners are set to review a major technology contract. The board will consider a six-year, $257,600 agreement with EagleView to provide updated aerial imaging services for the county.

Also on the agenda, the Public Works Department is seeking approval to establish a flat $2,000 fee for the installation of new road culverts. Commissioners are also scheduled to vote on purchasing replacement cell phones for the county's IT Department.
