McPherson County Fills Regional Gap in Passport Services

McPherson County's Register of Deeds office has emerged as a regional passport processing center, handling applications from residents across multiple counties after Rice, Harvey, and other neighboring jurisdictions discontinued the service due to staffing constraints. During Monday's county commission meeting, Register of Deeds Laurie Wiziarde reported the increased workload has kept her staff "very busy" as they serve customers from a wider geographic area, noting that many counties have stopped offering passport services because they lack the personnel or time to manage the federal program. Wiziarde, who also requested a pay grade increase for her multilingual deputy during her budget presentation, emphasized the deputy's value in serving diverse customers with her fluency in five languages, along with her expertise in training staff and generating essential reports for the expanding passport operation.
