McPherson County Farm Bureau Honors Baldwin Family at Annual Meeting
Groveland Township property has remained in same family line since 1898
McPherson, KS- An 80-acre farm in Section 22 of Groveland Township owned by Dwight and Cindy Baldwin and their son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Kim Baldwin, has been designated as a Century Farm by the Kansas Farm Bureau Association. The recognition honors farms that have been owned by the same family for at least 100 years. The property has been owned by descendants of Henry (Henrich) B. Rump since 1898, when Henry A. Rump purchased the land from the Kasey family. Henry B. Rump is Cindy Baldwin's great-great grandfather, and the Baldwin family purchased the ground from Cindy's cousin in 2021, keeping ownership within the Rump family line.
The farm's history traces back to German immigrants who arrived in Kansas in 1880. Henry B. Rump, his wife Caroline, and their four eldest children immigrated from near Hannover, Germany, settling in Groveland Township where they purchased a farm in Section 27. After Henry B. Rump died of a heart attack in 1888 at age 44, his widow Caroline, who spoke little English, went to court to gain legal guardianship of her minor children's estate. The family's connection to the current Century Farm began in 1898 when Henry A. Rump purchased the Section 22 property upon his marriage. The land passed through several generations of the Rump family before the Baldwins acquired it, maintaining more than 125 years of family ownership.
