McPherson County continues housing inmates in Rice County amid high jail population
Sheriff reports 55 inmates currently in custody, aims to lower count to 45
MCPHERSON COUNTY — McPherson County Jail continues to outsource inmate housing to neighboring Rice County as local custody numbers remain elevated, with 55 inmates in custody as of this week.
The McPherson County Sheriff's Office, under Sheriff Jerry Montagne, reported an active roster of 47 male and eight female inmates, with 54 held for McPherson County District Court. At a recent county commission meeting, the sheriff's office noted 22 arrests over the past week and said the goal is to reduce the jail population to the 45-inmate range.
Keeping the population lower allows the jail to maintain necessary pod separations for classification purposes. In related personnel action, the commission unanimously approved the hiring of certified officer Marvin Rock for the sheriff's office, effective May 11.
