Commissioners express frustration over KDOT's U.S. 56 redesign concepts

McPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The McPherson County Board of Commissioners voiced strong frustration over the Kansas Department of Transportation's (KDOT) ongoing work to develop options for changes along the U.S. 56 corridor, citing a lack of communication with county officials. KDOT's concepts discussed for neighboring cities include major changes in Canton, which county officials said could require purchasing additional right-of-way and potentially affecting existing businesses, as well as a possible bypass loop south of Galva. County leaders urged concerned citizens to contact KDOT or their state representatives directly, as the county board has been largely excluded from the state-led design meetings.

Bridge replacement set for accelerated start

McPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Construction on the $974,274 county-funded Comanche Road bridge replacement project near Groveland will begin much earlier than anticipated after the contractor, L&M Builders of Great Bend, notified the county of an immediate start date. Originally scheduled to begin around June 1, the project's accelerated timeline forced the McPherson County Public Works Department to rush its request for qualifications for a part-time inspector. The board agreed to allow the department to verbally select an inspector this week to ensure representation at the upcoming pre-construction meeting, with final approval expected next Monday.

Commission finalizes sale of former McKIDS building to Prairie View

McPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The board finalized the sale of the county-owned McKids building at 1106 Hospital Drive to Prairie View, a local mental health and behavioral care provider, for a sale price of $300,000. The McPherson County Special Education Cooperative (MCSEC) will continue to utilize a portion of the space until the end of the current school year to minimize operational disruptions. Following the conclusion of the school year, Prairie View personnel will assume full occupancy of the facility.
