MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The McPherson County Board of Commissioners approved the final change order for the McPherson County Building project, reducing the final cost by $33,537. A representative from Fuqua Construction Inc. presented the order, bringing the final contract total to $7.38 million. The deductions came from salvaging materials, reusing existing storefront systems and managing allowances efficiently. A one-year warranty on the newly completed project began June 5.

Arapaho Road bridge replacement awarded to L&M Contractors

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Commissioners awarded a $597,438 contract to Great Bend-based L&M Contractors for the replacement of the Arapaho Road bridge, located south of Inman between Seventh and Eighth avenues. The winning bid came in significantly under the engineer's estimate of $740,000. Through a Kansas Department of Transportation grant program based on population, 85 percent of the construction and inspection costs will be covered by state funds. Construction is expected to begin in February 2027.

Late summer road maintenance projects underway

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Drivers are urged to exercise caution and drive slowly as public works crews begin late-summer road maintenance across the county. Chip sealing operations started south of Inman on Arapaho Road and will move to Fourth Avenue between Apache and U.S. Highway 56. Additionally, milling and paving operations are scheduled to begin on Fifth Avenue near Quivira before moving north to Marquette, allowing crews to maximize equipment use across multiple sites.

Comanche Road bridge project on track for late September reopening

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — McPherson County Public Works Project Engineer Elizabeth Hopp reported a successful 1 a.m. concrete deck pour for the Comanche Road bridge project last week. Crews will test the concrete's strength after a 15-day curing period before safely removing the forms. L&M Contractors currently projects the bridge will reopen to traffic by the end of September, following the completion of intersection paving and guardrail installation.

County sees significant surge in development valuation

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — McPherson County is experiencing a massive increase in building valuations this year, according to the planning and zoning department. The department handled 101 cases in July, bringing the year-to-date valuation to $54 million, nearly double the $28 million total for all of last year. Recent major projects driving the increase include a $16 million zoning permit for a major industrial expansion and two administrative permits totaling $30 million.

Jail population hits 53 amid ongoing animal seizure case

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The McPherson County jail population currently stands at 53 inmates, including 49 individuals awaiting district court appearances, according to the sheriff's office. While reporting on a busy but manageable weekend that included community events, Sheriff Jerry Montagne also noted the county is currently incurring costs to house animals involved in an ongoing legal matter. The sheriff's office hopes to have an update on the legal proceedings and animal housing expenses next week.
