Commission proposes property tax rate reduction
MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The McPherson County Commission approved a notice of intent regarding the revenue neutral rate, proposing a property tax reduction for 2026. The property tax rate is projected to drop to 30 mills, a one-mill reduction from the 2025 rate of 31 mills. Officials praised department heads for their careful budgeting, noting that the county will be able to maintain current services while lowering the mill levy despite nationwide inflation. The official budget will be submitted to the county clerk before Oct. 1.
Commission approves $26,841 change order for Fifth Avenue roadwork
MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The commission approved a $26,841 change order to an unidentified road contractor for milling and widening work on Fifth Avenue. Public Works Project Engineer Elizabeth Hopp explained that the original scope of the project was to pave a 22-foot lane, but the county opted to widen the road to 27 feet before milling to achieve a higher-quality final product. The milling work is scheduled to begin Aug. 3 following the completion of overlay work on County Road 448.
Sheriff's office reports busy weekend of arrests and crashes
MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — The McPherson County Sheriff's Office reported an exceptionally busy weekend, responding to three fights, two suspicious person complaints and an unconfirmed report of sexual battery. Deputies also responded to a driving under the influence crash with injuries, two additional injury crashes and several driving complaints. Law enforcement also completed targeted traffic enforcement during the weekend. Currently, the county jail holds 47 inmates, including 42 males and five females.
County coordinates with Sedgwick County on Equus Beds water levels
MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — McPherson County is coordinating with Sedgwick County officials regarding dropping water levels in the Equus Beds Groundwater Management District No. 2 (GMD-2). A county representative recently attended a Sedgwick County work session to discuss GMD-2 concerns. Sedgwick County plans to follow up directly with the state office and GMD-2, promising to keep McPherson County included in all future conversations regarding the local water supply.
