McPherson County approves $252,000 for new plow truck, saves on bridge materials

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Residents will see a new $252,686 plow dump truck clearing McPherson County roads by 2026 or 2027 after the Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to upgrade the aging fleet. The date of the commission meeting was not provided.

The purchase from MHC Kenworth in Salina will replace a 2008 International truck that Public Works Director David Bohnenblust said had been a continuous financial drain due to engine and electrical issues. To save taxpayer money, the county will reuse its current salt and sand spreader. The winning bid came in roughly $20,000 to $30,000 under the anticipated budget and well below the highest bid of $347,000 for the same specifications.

In a separate unanimous vote on local infrastructure, commissioners approved up to $9,000 to purchase used concrete blocks for upcoming bridge repairs and low-water crossings. Bohnenblust told the commission that buying used materials will save the county about 40% compared to purchasing new blocks. The materials are expected to supply the county's infrastructure repair needs for the next three to four years.
