McPherson, KS- McPherson College has received approval from the Higher Learning Commission to offer a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science beginning in August 2026. The new program will feature two areas of emphasis—strength and conditioning or exercise physiology—and aims to prepare students for careers in fitness assessment, athletic performance, rehabilitation, and preventative healthcare. According to Dr. Austin McCulloch, chair of the Health and Sports Studies Department, the degree addresses strong regional demand for skilled health and wellness professionals, with U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting 14% growth in strength and conditioning jobs and 10% growth in exercise physiology positions over the next decade.

The program will be housed in newly renovated laboratory spaces in Melhorn Science Hall, made possible through $2.1 million in congressionally directed funding secured by Senator Jerry Moran to support the college's rural and community health initiative. "Adding this program broadens our healthcare offerings and provides students with multiple academic and career pathways," said Dr. Molly Brown, director of healthcare initiatives. The college plans to pursue accreditation through leading organizations including the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education and will partner with local organizations such as the McPherson YMCA to provide hands-on learning experiences for students entering the health and fitness industry.
