McPherson College Opens New Campus Commons with Ferrari Centerpiece
The 55,000-square-foot student center features a 1972 Ferrari suspended in its atrium and new dining, retail and collaboration spaces.

MCPHERSON — McPherson College celebrated the opening of its new Campus Commons with a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 24, highlighted by the installation of a rare 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona suspended from the atrium ceiling. The multi-level, 55,000-square-foot facility houses new dining options, a coffee shop, campus store and student collaboration spaces, serving as a centerpiece for the college's ongoing campus expansion.
The Daytona Ferrari, ranked by MotorTrend as the second greatest Ferrari of all time, was donated in 2022 by Dr. Richard Lundquist, a California real estate developer and McPherson College trustee. Lundquist and his wife Melanie have committed $50 million to the college and are longtime supporters of the institution's unique automotive restoration program.
"This is a historic day for McPherson College," said President Michael Schneider. "We have been rapidly expanding our campus to give students the best possible experience, and the Campus Commons will serve as a vibrant hub for our community." The building's prairie-inspired design features a bright, glassy atrium connecting all three floors while showcasing the Ferrari as a tribute to the college's automotive program.
The new facility is part of a larger campus expansion that has increased the college's physical footprint by 20% since 2022, with nearly half of existing buildings renovated. Wichita-based Dondlinger Construction completed the project, which also includes a career center, welcome center for prospective students, and one-stop enrollment services.
