Hickory Street project expands to include West Hayes Street block

MCPHERSON, Kan. - Commissioners authorized a $28,973 change order with Alfred Benesch & Company to expand the design of the Hickory Street reconstruction project. The additional funding will incorporate the 600 block of West Hayes Street, which city crews were unable to reconstruct last year. Public Works Director Eric Duerksen noted that the additional design work will likely push the project's bid date from April to June.

Northview and Tulip Street projects move forward

MCPHERSON, Kan. - Public works staff reported that crews made progress on the Northview sidewalk project, pouring entrances for Northridge Crossing Apartments and Countryside Covenant Church before recent rains halted work. Additionally, the department is preparing to survey property lines along Tulip Street to address fence and shed relocations required for upcoming drainage and street improvements along that corridor.

Floodplain regulations updated to secure insurance discounts

MCPHERSON, Kan. - The commission voted to adopt revised floodplain management regulations to maintain the city's standing in the Community Rating System program, which provides discounted flood insurance rates for residents. The revisions, which include requirements for raising mechanical units to base flood elevation, were reviewed by the Kansas Department of Agriculture's Division of Water Resources and an engineering consultant to ensure compliance with the National Flood Insurance Program.

Commission approves distribution of alcohol tax funds

MCPHERSON, Kan. - Commissioners approved the 2026 Special Alcohol Funds Advisory Board's recommendation to distribute $50,000 in liquor tax revenues to local prevention and treatment programs. The funding includes $19,000 for the Central Kansas Foundation for outpatient counseling, $19,000 to The Omega Project for addiction counseling and $12,000 to support D.A.R.E. programs in McPherson Public Schools.

Permits granted for 2026 community events

MCPHERSON, Kan. - The commission approved permits for several major community events scheduled for 2026, including the "Burnin' Down Main" Chili Cook-off in October and the FYR-Mac-Town 5K run in May. Commissioners also approved the "Daddy's, Buddy's and Bobber's" youth fishing derby at Lakeside Park for June 20, as well as a July 3 performance by the Intrepid Brass Band.
